Key Financial Reports Every Business Owner Should Understand

The essential financial statements and what they tell you about your business

Overview

Financial statements are the primary tool for understanding the financial health of a business. This article explains the three core financial reports — the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement — and how to read them effectively.

The Income Statement

The income statement shows revenue, costs, and profit over a period of time. It answers the question of whether the business is generating a profit from its core operations, but it does not, on its own, tell you whether the business has enough cash on hand.

The Balance Sheet

The balance sheet is a snapshot of what the business owns and owes at a single point in time — its assets, liabilities, and equity. It provides insight into the financial structure and solvency of the business, complementing the performance view given by the income statement.

The Cash Flow Statement

The cash flow statement tracks the actual movement of cash in and out of the business, split between operating, investing, and financing activities. Because profit and cash are not the same thing, this report is essential for understanding a business’s real liquidity position.

Reading the Reports Together

The three statements are most powerful when read together: a profitable business on the income statement can still run into serious cash flow trouble, while the balance sheet reveals the underlying financial structure that supports (or constrains) future decisions.
